WINNIPEG, MB –Today marks the first International Day of the World’s Indigenous Women and Girls. We honour the strength, leadership, and resilience of Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people across Canada and internationally. Their languages, cultures, teachings, and contributions have strengthened our communities for generations and continue to shape our collective future.
This day also affirms the fundamental human rights: Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people to safety, security, and well-being. Too often, these rights have not been protected, and the harms experienced by our communities persist without sufficient accountability.
Today, we call for these rights to be upheld and protected while celebrating the invaluable roles Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people hold in our communities as leaders, Elders, mothers, sisters, daughters and aunties.
Their knowledge and experiences must inform decision making, and their voices must be meaningfully represented in positions of leadership and in decision-making spaces, particularly where policies and programs directly affect their lives and communities. Their lived expertise is essential to lasting, just change.
